I’m proud to introduce to you my first ever pattern in adult AND child and toddler sizing! The Through the Rain Cowl and the Through the Rain Cowl MINI are here!

Inspired by mosaic knitting, I wanted to create a similarly mesmerizing stitch motif with crochet. This is a great project for mini skeins or scraps, even gradient cakes- the color combinations are truly endless! And while it *looks* complex, it only uses basic stitches- and it’s NOT COLORWORK! I promise you will only be working with one color of yarn at a time!

You can find the printable pattern PDF for the Through the Rain Cowl in my ETSY and RAVELRY stores! As well as the MINI version on Etsy and Ravelry!

OR get all three patterns at a discount when you BUNDLE them! (Etsy listing, or applies automatically when you add both to cart on Ravelry!).

The Inspiration: It’s not secret to anyone familiar with my designs that I love a good “graynbow” (gray+rainbow combo), so I am sure no one is surprised at yet another way to work graynbow into their handmade wardrobe. But for me, I always need a reminder to look for the rainbows in the darker times! (The name “Through the Rain” is taken from an old 1800’s hymn called “Oh Love That Will Not Let Me Go” – lyrics included at the end of the pattern!)

While I love the pattern in a rainbow color scheme it looks incredible in any combo of scraps, minis, even just a main color and a contrast color! (I’ve got testers to share, keep a reading!)

The Cowl(s):

The cowls are all worked in one piece from the bottom up using what *looks* to be a tricky stitch, but really it’s just some clever stitch placement and a very basic crochet stitch. The pattern is available in adult/mama size, as well as in toddler and child sizes. (The 2 PDFS can be purchased separately, or bundled at a discount!).

Adult: ~22″ circumference at top of neck, ~25 circumference at bottom of neck, 15″ tall

Child/Youth: ~21″ circumference at top of neck, ~24 circumference at bottom of neck, 10.75″ tall

Toddler: ~18″ circumference at top of neck, ~20.5″ circumference at bottom of neck, 10″ tall

The Yarn: I made my mama size in a moody rainbow mini skein set from Laine & Lotus (on a 75/25% superwash merino/nylon base), and a main color skein also from Laine and Lotus called “The Mist” (I love the tiny rainbow flecks!) on her 2-ply twist sock base. The toddler version used leftovers from the same mini skein set, but I used a one-of-a-kind skein (similar to this one) from Silver Key Stitches on her 2-ply base. I actually REALLY love combining a 4 ply contrast with a 2-ply main color in a motif like this. It really makes the stitches pops individually!

Approximate yardage:
Main color (A): ~200 (290, 355) yds of fingering/sock/1 weight yarn
Contrast Mini Skeins B-H: Seven 20 g mini skeins, ~28 (32, 42) yards each of fingering/sock/1 weight yarn

If working with a 7 color 20 gram mini skein set like I did you will be able to get multiple cowls out of a set. Mama+toddler, Mama+child, Child+toddler…IF you wanna be all matchymatchy. If not, go wild on colors! While written for the amount of minis I used, the pattern is easy to adapt to whatever amount of colors/stripes you want to use!

But as always, there are plenty of other more budget friendly options. If you’re looking for something you can find at your local craft store I recommend checking out Woollike by Loops and Threads (Michael’s) (an 85/15 acrylic/nylon blend at $3 for 678 yds)- it comes in tons of solid colors! Or Soft and Sleek DK (Hobby Lobby) – it’s sold as DK but its definitely a fingering weight sub, and bonus it washes really well (its 100% acrylic, $5 for 478 yards, in an array of heathered colors). WeCrochet/Knitpicks is also a great resource for budget friendly options! And WEBS does discounts based on quantity which can be super helpful when buying a sweater amount!

I love to encourage crocheters to try out indie dyed yarn (it’s not just for knitters!!!!), but I never want you to feel like you can’t make my patterns without subbing in a yarn that works for you! Also, do not be intimidated by fingering weight yarn– you will not regret it!

What’s Included: The pattern is available as a discounted bundle of BOTH the Adult sized version, and the Toddler & Child sized versions combined together, or as separate PDFS (Adult as one, Toddler & Child as another), if you don’t plan to make multiple sizes. ********

All sizes are fully tested and tech edited. The stitch pattern used in the cowl *looks* complex, but its actually very simple (and again, it’s NOT colorwork!). The pattern includes several helpful photo tutorials to help you on things like stitch placement. It’s also very easy to adapt to what colors/color amounts you’d like to use, if you don’t want to stick to the same palette and stripe sequence I chose.

The Testers: As always, I get the loveliest and most creative testers! Check out all these beautiful color combinations and mama/mini cuties!

I’m always a sucker for a mustard and plum… I cannot get over how much I love this mustardy jewel tone version by Novella of @vellano09.

I’d also totally wear this color combo…like it’s a rainbow, but not quite? Loving how Siobhan of @yarnoverfloyd paired her colors!

Phoenix of @fibersbyphoenix went all matchy matchy mama and mini and I can’t get enough of the cuteness!

How dazzling is this neutral version that Nikkie of @nik.nak.knots created? While I love a bright and jewelry rainbow, I get that’s not for everyone. You can definitely make it as wild or as subtle as you’d like!

I love how Kaitlin of @sass.and.stitch also went for the neutrals on cream, but with more of a pumpkin spice latte sort of vibe!

Pastels! How cheery is this color combination Christina of @absocrochetlutely put together? I love the subtle speckle in the main color skein!

Brittni of @emberjunedesigns also went for the mommy and me look! (I love this stage when matching with mama is still cool!). SOMEONE GO MAKE YOURSELF AND MULTIPLE AGED CHILDREN MATCHING ONES AND I’LL CRY!

Isn’t it awesome how the mood just completely changes based on the mini skeins? Instead of pairing neutrals with a cream Alexa of @stitchbylex went for brights!

It seems an off white/cream was a popular color choice for the main skein! Amy of @browneyedcrochetgirl chose more jewely contrast skeins and I’m loving it!

I hope this inspired you to make your own Through the Rain Cowl…or maybe a SET?! Hopefully I have answered any questions you might have on the design- don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any more! Happy making, my friends!
